HISTORY, CURIOSITIES AND MODELS
Better a "flat" but long life, or a glorious but short one? Hummer, like Achilles, chose the second. So intense that its debut does not take place under the warm lights of a motor show, but under the scorching sun of the Iraqi desert. It is 1991 and the United States, under the presidency of George Bush, attack Saddam Hussein's Iraq. The American troops are being transported by the Hummer, or rather by the one initially codenamed HMMWV, an illegible acronym that stands for High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. Translated (very) roughly, it sounds more or less like this: a vehicle equipped with wheels capable of anything and that must stop at nothing. A definition worthy of the best marketing minds, with the difference that here it is... terribly seriously. War is never a joke, and when the U.S. Army awarded the contract to AM General in 1979, it put together a list of requirements that kept the engineers responsible for the design awake at night.
Images of the operation Desert Storm The U.S. Army's Hummer arrived in homes around the world, and off-road enthusiasts couldn't help but notice – in addition to the horror that war always brings – that gigantic vehicle used by the American troops. AM General's top managers realized the potential they had in their hands and in 1992 launched the Hummer, a version Humvee civilian. Civilized in a manner of speaking: forget the pampering of modern SUVs, the Hummer H1 is rugged and proud of it. A bit like its first customer: a certain Arnold Schwarzenegger, at the time still only a Terminator and a bodybuilder and far from a political career. Well, to turn the wheel of the Hummer you don't necessarily need his biceps and deltoids, but almost. In any case, it's the turning point: the Hummer brand lands in Hollywood (and to think that now everyone wants nothing more than electric and hybrid) and from there to becoming “cool” was a matter of moments. The turning point from a commercial point of view, however, came in 1999, when General Motors acquired the exclusive rights to the Hummer brand for the entire world from AM General (which continued to handle the manufacturing).
The H1, though adapted to the needs of the road, was still too big for European roads, and even American ones. General Motors, wanting to capitalize on the Hummer's momentum, designed the H2 from scratch. Most of the components were GM-derived, and the engine was a V8. 6.0 petrol 322 HP; in 1997 the displacement increased to 6.2 liters and the power to 398 HP. In 2005 the most compact of the range arrived (still 4.74 meters long): it was the H3, the last model produced before the bankruptcy and closure of the brand in 2010. It was based on the same pick-up Chevrolet Colorado and it has engines, all petrol, 3.5 with 223 hp, 3.7 with 245 hp and 5.3 V8 with 305 hp. It's certainly not a range tailored for Europe and Italy, but pre-crisis Italy also has room for it: it certainly can't be said that the roads are full of H3s, but you see quite a few of them around.
